Artistic and creative interpretations of Christian church hymns and praise songs are on display at Houston's First Baptist Church for the Easter season. The art show is intentionally at Easter, and the first installation in 2009 was based on the Stations of the Cross, though subsequent exhibits haven't been specifically about Lent or the crucifixion or resurrection of Christ, said Steven Murray, the church's director of communications. "People are visual learners, and because church revolves around the spoken word, they can lose sight of the beauty of who God is," Reed said. For Reed's own piece, "Breaking Light," he compiled six photos and used typography with digital design to manipulate the images onto acrylic. For me to be able to create a piece because I know what the darkness and light is like, it means that God meant us to be free and to walk with him in love and freedom. Meagan Stillwell infused lavender oil with paint, faux rubies and diamonds to create her mixed-media piece of "Crown Him With Many Crowns," by Matthew Bridges and Godfrey Thring. The back of Soukup's artwork is an intricate design of lights that change color, and the front represents the poem's theme of heaven and creation.
